ARLIS/SOUTHEAST 21st CONFERENCE

Clemson SC - October 12-21, 1995

This year's annual chapter meeting was filled with much excitement and anticipation related to the commitment and planning for the upcoming ARLIS/NA Conference to be held in Miami Beach in April 1996. ARLIS/SE, being the host chapter for this event, has been working out the various details of the program and duties of the local arrangements committee.

Members began arriving on Thursday evening, October 19th. Debbie Barlow, incoming chapter president, along with Ann Lally and Phyllis Pivorum, hosted a wine and cheese reception at the poolside gazebo at the local Ramada Inn. Following the reception members had dinner on their own and went to either Tacquiria or Leung Chinese Restaurant. A good time was had by all.

Friday morning the group of over 25 persons met at the Madren Center on the Clemson University campus for the annual business meeting and presentations, and were welcomed by Elizabeth Rich, Chapter President. The center provided the group with a continental breakfast and snacks. The morning session consisted of a presentation by Ann Lally, who had developed a "Virtual Tour of the Emery A. Gunning Architectural Library" at Clemson University. The tour was developed as an in-house project for the university library faculty and students.

The annual business meeting focuses primarily on the Miami Beach conference. Conference co-chairs, Stephen Patrick and Anne Ross, provided the membership with an update to the Conference Planning Advisory Committee meeting held in Miami Beach the previous July. They outlined the types of events and programs being submitted and considered.

In other business, the Chapter elected new officers for the coming year. LeAnne Brown of the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta GA was elected President- Elect, and Emma Zell of Jacksonville FL was elected Secretary-Treasurer. On other business the winners of the 11th annual LoPresti Awards were announced. Offers to host the 1996 chapter meeting came from LeAnne Brown of Augusta and Marilyn Healey of Athens GA. As soon as a location is decided the membership will be notified.

Following a box lunch at the Madren Center, members were treated to tours of the recently restored Hanover House and the South Carolina Botanical Gardens, the Strom Thurmond Institute and the Emery A. Gunnin Architectural Library. The weather changed from sunny to rainy, which made for an interesting walking tour.

Friday evening, the members had dinner at Pendleton House, a restaurant housed in one of the many restored homes located in the Pendleton Historic District. The dinner was delightful and another good time was had by all.

On Saturday morning, several members drove to Asheville NC for a tour of the Biltmore House and Gardens. Those of us who didn't go with them left Clemson with good feelings of a memorable weekend.
