Welcome to the Smoky Mountains! On behalf of the planning committee for the 28th Annual ARLIS/SE Conference, welcome to Asheville, North Carolina! The conference schedule is full of opportunities to learn about the region's unique art and architectural history and to meet with colleagues from libraries throughout the Southeast. Not only will you be able to breathe in the fresh mountain air, but you'll be able to see one of the great estates of North America: Biltmore, built as a summer retreat by George Vanderbilt in 1895.

Renowned for its arts and crafts community, Asheville and district have a wealth of sights to entice you: from the city's panorama of American architectural styles from 1830 to the present day to the scenery of the surrounding region. See our Conference Highlights for more details.

We'll be staying at the Renaissance Hotel, in downtown Asheville, close to all the amenities and charm of the city as well as the many restaurants, galleries and museums, bookstores and other attractions. Visit the Asheville Chamber of Commerce website (www.exploreasheville.com) or www.asheville.com for more information on Asheville's many exciting possibilities.

Conference Highlights

  • Biltmore Estate: More than a century ago, George Vanderbilt created a larger-than-life country retreat in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Its centerpiece—Biltmore House—provided 250 rooms of hospitality to family and friends. Today, Biltmore Estate continues to offer a gracious escape from everyday life. Marvel at the grandeur of America’s largest home filled with Vanderbilt’s collection of fine art and antiques. Stroll through gardens created by America’s father of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted. Enjoy estate-raised foods, and savor award-winning vintages at Biltmore’s winery. For information about Biltmore, visit the official website at www.biltmore.com (best viewed in Internet Explorer), or the Biltmore Estate Pathfinder created by R. Ferrell, Graduate Student in Library Science at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
  • Grove Park Inn: Bruce Johnson, coordinator of the Arts and Crafts Conference at the Grove
Park, will lead us on a tour and speak about the history of this famous resort inn, built in 1913 overlooking the Asheville, North Carolina skyline and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its splendid views, old world charm, peerless amenities, and a long tradition of exceptional service and hospitality make it a place to savor as one of the most enduringly original and exciting resorts in America. For more information about the Grove Park Inn, visit the official website at www.groveparkinn.com. Author, woodworker, and collector Bruce Johnson originated the Grove
Park Inn conference 12 years ago, hoping to lure perhaps 75 collectors to the inn during the off-season. About 300 came the first year, with a third of them returning each year since then, and others have joined the parade. He is also the recipient of the Craftsman Farms Foundation's 1999 "Als ik Kan" award. and is the author of:

The Book of Mottos from the Grove Park Inn, 1996.
Built for the Ages : a History of the Grove Park Inn, 1991.
The official identification and price guide to arts and crafts: the early modernist movement in American decorative arts, 1894-1923, 1988.

Conducted by local historians, this 2-hour walk covers nearly 2 miles of the downtown area. For further information, please visit their website at www.ci.asheville.nc.us/parks/urban.htm.
