ARLIS/NA Annual

Meeting called to order at 4:10 P.M.
Chapter President Moira Steven welcomed ARLIS/SE chapter members and guests.
Minutes approved as corrected and published in the newsletter and web site.
Members introduced themselves, including students, new members, and Laura Schwartz, ARLIS/NA South Regional Representative.
No reports.
Past webmasters Sarah McCleskey and Roberto Ferrari reported that the current website cannot be updated/changed due to other priorities at SEFLIN, the host server. No report was provided by current webmaster Pedro Figueredo.
ARTifacts Newsletter
No report. Moira and Sarah encouraged new and student members to introduce themselves via the newsletter.
Sarah McCleskey reported for Sarah Legins that distribution to publishers will take place as usual, with ongoing assistance from Allen Novak.
South Regional Representative Laura Schwartz said that she reported to the Board the chapters’ desire to have time at the New York conference for chapters to meet. The Board will probably provide such time. Laura will send her full conference executive board report to us for ARTifacts.
Sarah reported that planning is underway and the conference dates are November 13 -16, 2003. The conference hotel is the Hampton Inn Garden District. Activities include Wine and Cheese gathering, continental breakfast hosted by the New Orleans Museum of Art (Norbert Raacke, Librarian); discount tickets for the exhibit available for the Egyptian exhibit from at the NOMA, Jazz-fest type food vendors available outside the exhibit, speakers yet to be determined, red beans and rice dinner at Carl Penny’s home hosted by Carl and Norbert. The Ogden Museum of Art, dedicated to Louisiana art, is an additional venue which may be of interest to conference attendees. Both chapters have received ARLIS/NA grants of $500 for expenses, except food. Sarah will post news and opportunities to volunteer as presenters to both chapters’ listservs.
MISCELLANEOUS
No report. Kim Collins will send renewal letters to former members who have not renewed for more than a year and will do that in conjunction with sending conference news.
Conference chairs may send papers to Lee Sorensen for the ARLIS/SE archives at Duke University.
Kathleen List reported that Ringling School Library Association presented the college with a $500,000 for scholarship and library acquisitions endowment. The Library Association, founded in 1975, has given Ringling School of Art and Design over $2.0 million.
At the ARLIS/NA Convocation, Jim Findlay received the
Worldwide Books Award for his Big Little
Books: The Whitman Publishing Company’s Golden Age, 1932-1938.
Jim Findlay announced that the 2002 Florida Artists’ Book Prize was awarded to Chiarlone, Rosemarie for HiddenRealities. Roberto Ferrari reported that a successful workshop was held in conjunction with the Jaffe Collection.
Moira Steven reported that Nexus Press has suspended operations and that a task force is working on possible solutions to sustaining the activity of the press independent of the parent institution, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. Moira is an ongoing member of Friends of the Press.
A grant request for 2004 is due at ARLIS/NA by the end of May. Members noted that the next ARLIS/SE conference is the chapter’s 30th anniversary. Suggested venues are Charleston and Savannah. Lee will do some follow up with Laura Kuzinoh and Sarah McCleskey.
Roberto opened the discussion about ARLIS/SE sponsoring the national conference within the next few years. Possible locations included Charleston, Atlanta, Sarasota, Jacksonville, New Orleans. A “talk group” made up of Kim Collins, Stephen Patrick, Moira Steven, and Roberto Ferrari will continue the discussion.
